PortBIS – A Port Community Information System
In 2008, in response to the NSW Government’s IPART Report on Port Botany, Tradegate proposed that a port community information system, PortBIS, be implemented as a means to improve the flow of cargo through Australia’s 2nd largest container port. This recommendation was supported by Shipping Australia.
Why PortBIS?
PortBIS arose as a direct result of feedback from importers and freight forwarders about the difficulties they faced in obtaining information about their containers/cargoes. In particular, cargo owners and their agents wanted automated answers to:
- What ship is my container on?
- When is the ship scheduled to arrive?
- Has the vessel arrived?
- When is the container available?
- Has it been discharged?
- Has the DO been issued?
- Has the container been picked up?
- Has the empty container been returned?

Business Continuity Planning for EDI Messaging to Customs and 1-Stop
Over the last twenty years and more particularly since Australian Customs rolled out CMR, the critical nature of communications within the industry has increased to the point that business simply stops if you lose your email or internet connection. This has lead to the requirement for a business continuity plan, BCP, being more critical than ever. At the simplest level you should ask yourself questions like;
- What would you do if your email server failed?
- What would you do if your Internet connection was down for a week?
In response to a number of requests from industry, Tradegate has developed a product called “Managed Mail” that isolates your business critical email and hosts it on Tradegate’s highly reliable CommercePlus messaging platform. This ensures that while you may lose your general internet and email, you continue communicating to Customs, 1-Stop and other vital partners.

PortBIS Update No 3
PortBIS has been further enhanced to support provision of actual arrival and departure information direct from Sydney Ports Corporation. This arrival and departure information is the latest and most up to date for the Port of Sydney. The Sydney Ports Corporation and Tradegate have an agreement to share data which is supplied for the wider community benefit. Tradegate would like to thank Sydney Ports Corporation for its co-operation in the supply of this service.
In addition to the arrival and departure information, PortBIS also supports empty container return information for 10 shipping companies and 22 container parks across Australia. This underlines one of the key objectives of PortBIS – the provision of a national port community information system. Registered Smartimports users can login to their account at www.tradegate.org.au and explore these new features.
